That is because in his four years working the tower at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the controller said, Southwest planes usually took off as soon as they got permission. “But hindsight being 20/20,” controller Damian Campbell told investigators, he “definitely could have held them,” referring to making the Southwest crew wait. Austin's airport is one of the newest and fastest-growing airports in the US. Despite efforts, the airport is rapidly outgrowing an infrastructure designed for a much smaller population. A 20-year expansion plan aims to build a model airport for growing cities, but forecasts predict it still won't be enough. The capital city of Texas has quadrupled its population since 2000, and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) serves as a gateway for transplants and visitors alike. But the airport has struggled to keep up with the city's booming population, leading to delays and other air-travel frustrations.

In a letter to Congress in early February, the FAA said it plans to dramatically accelerate replacing its outdated Notice To Air Missions (NOTAM) safety system, whose failure led to a nationwide air travel grounding in January. A contractor working for the FAA unintentionally deleted files related to the key pilot safety system, the FAA said. The near collisions have also raised concerns that the FAA’s safety systems may be insufficient. “Can I sit here today and tell you that there will never be another issue on the NOTAM system? That near collision happened after air traffic controllers cleared the FedEx Boeing 767 to land on Austin’s Runway 18 Left, according to the FAA.
Concerns have been raised about the potential for collisions on runways and taxiways in recent years. Southwest Airlines Co. and FedEx Corp. planes came within a thousand feet of each other Saturday morning near a runway at the Austin, Texas, airport, a close call that air-safety officials are investigating. Around 6:40 a.m. CT, a FedEx Boeing Co. 767 cargo plane was cleared to land on one of the runways at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said, citing preliminary information.
A FedEx aircraft aborted its landing to avoid a Southwest Airlines jet on Saturday during heavy fog. Both were mistakenly cleared for the same runway at Austin Bergstrom International Airport. "The pilot of the FedEx airplane discontinued the landing and initiated a climb out," said the FAA. "Shortly before the FedEx aircraft was due to land, the controller cleared Southwest Flight 708 to depart from the same runway," the FAA said, per Reuters. Southwest Airlines, FedEx, and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Insider.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened probes into the incident, which occurred at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Abbott held a meeting and news conference in preparation for the winter storm that is sweeping across portions of Texas. That evening, a 49-year-old woman died after the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado she was driving struck a tree near Eldorado, Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Dangerous roads and flight cancellationsThe storm has caused widespread travel chaos both on the roads and at airports this week. At Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), a set of tire chains and a taxidermy rat landed in lost-and-found. Passengers stuck at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago greeted the latest air travel disruption with a collective shrug. And our nation’s economy depends on a best-in-class air travel system. "We call on federal policymakers to modernize our vital air travel infrastructure to ensure our systems are able to meet demand safely and efficiently," he said. "An FAA system outage is causing ground stops at AUS and other airports across the country," the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport said in a tweet. Air France said all of its U.S.-bound flights were operating as planned and were not affected by the FAA computer outage.
I would lose the seniority I'd earned working at the San Antonio call center, but to me, it was the right choice. The thing about Southwest Airline employees, or at least the ones I work with, is their dedication. If you ever fly into the San Antonio International Airport, the employees you interact with have likely been there for years. My go-to suggestion for customers at the San Antonio Airport is to utilize the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. It's only about an hour-and-15-minute drive from the San Antonio Airport.
